Manage contracts on a project

Last updated: Aug 31, 2026

Every project has a Contracts tab that shows every contract that belongs to the project in one list — contracts you raised for the project itself, contracts that ride the project's estimates, and a collapsed History group of contracts made with the older contracts tool. From here you create a new contract, open it, send it for signature, download the PDF, or void it — without leaving the project.

Before you start

  • Create the project first — the tab lives on the project page.
  • Have the signer's email address; that's where the signing link goes.

Create a contract

  1. Open the project, click the Contracts tab, then New Contract.
  2. Choose where it starts:
    • For this project — opens the contract wizard with the project and its customer already filled in. There you can upload a PDF (your existing paperwork, up to 25 MB), write it, or start from a template, then place the signature fields on the real pages.
    • From estimate … — one option per estimate on the project that doesn't have a contract yet. The scope of work, client details and totals fill themselves in from the estimate. An estimate that already carries a live contract is shown with the reason instead — open that contract from the list, or void it first.
  3. After creating, a PDF contract lands in the field studio to place signature fields; a drafted contract lands in the editor to review the wording. The back arrow returns you to the project.

Send it for signature

On a Draft row, click Send. You sign first: your signing link is emailed to you now, and your client gets theirs automatically once you have signed. If the contract isn't ready (for example, no signature fields placed yet), the message tells you exactly what's missing — click Edit on the row to fix it.

A contract built from an estimate works slightly differently: it travels with its estimate, and your client signs it on the estimate page after approving — see Build a contract from an estimate.

Track it

Each row shows the live status (Draft, Sent, Viewed, Partially signed, Completed…) and, once parties exist, a signed-count like 1/2. Click the row to open the contract's own page — the full record of who was asked, what each person did and when, plus Download and Void.

Row actionWhen it showsWhat it does
EditDraftOpens the editor (drafted) or the field studio (PDF)

PDFAlwaysOpens the document — the sealed signed copy once completed
VoidSent / Viewed / Partially signedPermanently closes it

The History group

Contracts made with the older contracts tool appear under History, collapsed at the bottom. They can be viewed/downloaded (the PDF opens securely) and voided while still open, but not edited — new contracts always go through the studio above.

Troubleshooting

  • "No contracts on this project yet." — click New Contract to create the first one.
  • Send is refused because the contract isn't ready — the message names what's missing (for example, a signer with no fields). Open Edit on the row, place a signature field for each signer, then send again.
  • Wrong terms went outVoid the contract and create a new one. A completed contract is final; amend it with a change order instead.
  • The customer says the link doesn't work — if the contract was voided or superseded, its link is dead by design. Send a new contract.

FAQ

How does my customer sign the contract?

Sending starts the signing order: you sign first through the link emailed to you, and your client is emailed their private signing link once you have signed. They open it in the browser and sign — no account or app needed. A contract built from an estimate is signed on the estimate page itself, after they approve.

Can I edit a contract after I sent it?

Once sent, the wording and fields are locked. If something must change, void it and create a new one — the project keeps the voided copy for your records.

What does voiding a contract do?

Voiding permanently closes it — nobody can sign it anymore. A completed (fully signed) contract can't be voided; that record is final.

Where do I get the signed copy?

Click PDF on the contract's row (or Download on the contract's page). Once every party has signed you get the sealed, certified copy — with the Certificate of Completion attached.
