Point a phone number at a call flow
Last updated: Aug 24, 2026
A call flow answers a phone number only after you point the number at it. That happens in Phone System → Numbers: every number's row has an Inbound Call Flow column with a searchable picker — pick the flow, it saves instantly, and calls to that number route through the flow from the next ring. One flow can serve one number or a hundred.
Before you start
- You need at least one Published call flow — a Draft flow can't be assigned.
- You need a phone number — buy one or port one in.
Step 1 — Open the Numbers tab
Open Phone System in the left sidebar, then the Numbers tab. Find your number's row.
Step 2 — Pick the flow in the Inbound Call Flow column
- Click the picker in the Inbound Call Flow column. Unassigned numbers show "— No flow assigned —" (or "— No flows created —" plus a Create Flow shortcut if you haven't built any yet).
- Search or scroll to your flow and select it. The change saves immediately and the toast confirms with the flow's name — Dispatch Bros verifies the assignment actually persisted before calling it done.
- Back on the Call Flows tab, the flow's row now shows a Live on badge with the number count.
What else the picker offers
The picker is more than the published list:
- Drafts — unpublished flows appear under the heading "Drafts — publish to assign". Clicking one opens the builder on that flow so you can wire and publish it, then come back and assign.
- Job sources without a flow — active job sources that have no matching flow appear under "Job sources without a call flow", each with a one-click create action. Picking one creates a draft flow named after the source and opens the builder.
Dispatch Bros also mirrors your setup outward: the Outbound Sender column follows the inbound call flow — when a flow's name matches an active job source, texts from that number send under that source's brand.
Removing or changing the assignment
Open the picker and choose a different flow, or the no-flow option to clear it — the toast confirms "Call flow removed". A number with no flow no longer routes through any flow.
Troubleshooting
- The picker shows "— No flows created —" — you haven't built a flow yet. Use the Create Flow shortcut or see create a call flow.
- Your flow is missing from the assignable list — it's a draft. Find it under "Drafts — publish to assign", click it to open the builder, and press Publish.
- The cell reads "Reserved for call masking" — this number is a dedicated call masking line and can't take a call flow. Use a different number, or release it from masking first.
- The cell reads "Voice unavailable" — the number isn't active for voice yet (it may still be provisioning or mid-port), so no flow can be assigned.
- "Assignment did not persist — please try again" — the save didn't stick; retry the selection. If it repeats, refresh the page.
- You bought a number and want it wired right away — the post-purchase dialog includes an Assign Call Flow step with the same picker (its empty state reads "Assign flow..."), so you can connect it before ever leaving the purchase screen.
FAQ
Where do I connect a phone number to a call flow?
In Phone System, Numbers. Each number's row has an Inbound Call Flow column with a searchable picker — choose the flow and it saves immediately.
Can several numbers use the same call flow?
Yes. Assign as many numbers as you like to one flow — the flow's row on the Call Flows tab shows how many numbers it is live on.
Why can't I pick my flow in the dropdown?
Only Published flows are assignable. Draft flows appear in the picker under a Drafts heading, but clicking one opens the builder so you can publish it first.
How do I stop a flow from answering a number?
Open the number's Inbound Call Flow picker and choose the no-flow option. The toast confirms with Call flow removed.
