Create a Job Source and give it a color
Last updated: Aug 24, 2026
To create a Job Source, open Job Source in the left sidebar, click Add Job Source, type a name (for example Google, Yelp, or a referral partner), pick a color, and save. The color becomes that source's badge on every job, card, and report, so you can tell at a glance where work is coming from.
Before you start
- You need a role with permission to create job sources (owner or admin by default). Without it, the Add Job Source button doesn't appear.
- Think in terms of brands or lead channels, not campaigns — one source per line of business. Campaign-level tracking belongs in Ad Sources.
Step 1 — Open the Job Sources page
- Click Job Source in the left sidebar. The page is titled Job Sources — "Track where your jobs come from."
- If you have no sources yet, you'll see "No job sources found." with an Add Your First Job Source button.
Step 2 — Fill in the drawer
Click Add Job Source. A drawer opens on the right:
- Name — required. The placeholder suggests examples: "e.g. Google, Yelp, Referral".
- Description — optional notes about the source.
- Color — click one of the preset swatches, or the dashed + circle to pick any custom color. The Preview: pill below shows exactly how the source badge will look with your name and color.
- Click Add Job Source at the bottom. The button reads "Adding..." while it saves, then the drawer closes and the new card appears.
Step 3 — Edit, deactivate, or delete later
Hover over any source card to reveal its actions:
- Edit (pencil) — reopens the drawer with the name, description, and color. Edit mode adds a Status toggle with an Active checkbox; inactive sources won't appear in dropdowns.
- Deactivate — moves the card into the Inactive section at the bottom of the page. History is kept; click Reactivate to bring it back.
- Delete — Dispatch Bros first checks the impact and shows it in the confirmation, for example how many "job(s) will lose their source label." and how many "automation workflow(s) will be updated." If nothing references it, the message ends with "Safe to delete." Deleting cannot be undone.
What to do next
- Assign a sender number to the source so texts for its jobs come from the right line.
- Add its Google review link so review requests route customers to the right listing.
Troubleshooting
- "A job source with this name already exists." — names are unique per company. Check the Inactive section; the name may belong to a deactivated source you can reactivate instead.
- A source is missing from job dropdowns — it was probably deactivated. Find it under Inactive on the Job Sources page and click Reactivate.
- Delete fails for some selected sources — the page shows how many failed, e.g. "2 of 5 job source(s) failed to delete." Retry, or delete them one at a time to see each specific error.
FAQ
Why can't I save a job source with the same name as an existing one?
Source names must be unique in your company. You'll see 'A job source with this name already exists.' — pick a different name or edit the existing source instead.
What is the difference between deactivating and deleting a source?
Deactivating hides the source from dropdowns but keeps it (and its history) — you can reactivate it any time. Deleting removes it permanently; Dispatch Bros first tells you how many jobs will lose their source label and how many automations will be updated.
Where does the color show up?
The color becomes the source's badge everywhere a job source appears — on the source card, in job lists, and in per-source reports.
Who can create job sources?
Users whose role has job source create permission — owners and admins by default. If you don't see the Add Job Source button, ask an admin.
